Michael Martinez failed to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics by a whisker last year after finishing 8th in the Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany. Only the top 7 in the event qualified for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games. However, Martinez received a message from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) that he is going to PyeongChang because a Swedish figure skater withdrew.

“I got a message from the POC (Philippine Olympic Committee), and the federation. They said, ‘Michael, you’re in,'” said Michael Martinez. “I was pretty shocked.”

This will be the second Winter Olympics for Michael Martinez, who was the lone representative of the Philippines at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.
