RIP Burt Reynolds: Legendary Actor & Former Cosmo Centerfold Dies at 82

Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds is dead. Reynolds died of cardiac arrest in a Florida hospital on Thursday morning at 82 years old. Cause of death is cardiac arrest, although Reynolds had been suffering from several health issues in recent months.

A lifelong football fan, Burt Reynolds played football for Florida State University before an injury dashed his hopes of turning pro. A career in acting beckoned and Reynolds began appearing in television in the late 50. But it was not until he landed a role in Gunsmoke that he got noticed.

With his rugged good looks, Reynolds’ career naturally shifted to films. He was even offered the role of James Bond by Albert Broccoli but refused it saying an American can never play Bond.

His breakout movie role was in Deliverance in 1972. Many more roles followed and Burt Reynolds soon became one of Hollywood’s top-grossing stars. This came via films like Smokey and The Bandit, and Cannonball Run.

He also became one of Hollywood’s sex symbols, and in 1972 posed naked for a Cosmo centerfold.

Burt Reynolds was married twice, to Judy Carne and Loni Anderson, but had a string of romances with some of Hollywood’s beautiful women. One of these is Sally Field, whom he described in a Johnny Carson interview as ‘the love of his life’.

On Thursday, Sally Field released the following statement on Burt Reynold’s death:
