‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ dominated box office weekend ticket sales with a gross of $155 million in North America and $290 globally. ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ easily beat the competition led by another Disney film. ‘Moana’.

The box office success of the latest Star wards film is expected, of course. However, despite its huge take in ticket sales, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ still could not match the opening weekend record of its predecessor, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, which set record with a massive $248 million when it opened at about the same time last year.

“Rogue One” stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker, among others, and is set just before the events of the first Star Wars installment of 1977. Central to its plot is the story of Jyn Erso, the daughter of the unwilling designer of the Galactic Empire’s superweapon, the Death Star, and her quest to retrieve his plans for destroying it.

‘Moana’, which has been lording it over at the box office for the past three weeks, came in second this weekend with a total box office gross of $11.7 million, bringing its total to $161.8 million to date.

Two new entrants to the top ten this week are in third and fourth spot – ‘Office Christmas Party’ with $8.4 million, and ‘Collateral Beauty’ with $7 million.

‘Office Christmas Party’ is a comedy starring Jennifer Aniston, while ‘Collateral Beauty’ is led by an ensemble cast that includes Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley and Helen Mirren.

Clinging to fifth place in the weekend box office top ten is Harry Potter spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which earned $5 million. Its total is now at $207.6 million.
