Residents near the coast should beware: Typhoon Ompong may bring storm surges as high as 14 meters, or the height of a three-storey building! This according to authorities as Signal #3 was raised to a wider area on Friday as Bagyong Ompong nears Northern Luzon.

Typhoon Ompong is expected to make landfall in the Cagayan – Isabela area early Saturday morning. At present, #OmpongPH has maintained its strength of 205 kilometer-per-hour winds and gusts of up to 255 kph. It is moving at around 20 kph.

We are expecting storm surges which can go as high as 14 meters high. A one-storey building is 4.5 meters high, so these [storm surges] will be as high as three storey building,” said NDRRMC’s Edgar Posadas.

PAGASA gave an even bigger storm surge estimate in its weather update: “The storm surge prone areas of Cagayan and Isabela may expect up to 6 meters of surge.”

And if the storm surge coincides with high tide, the effect may even be more disastrous as we have seen in Tacloban during Yolanda several years ago.

As such, resident in coastal areas in Isabela and Cagayan, as well as those covered by Signal #2 and Signal #3, or even higher.
