Strong 5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Osaka, Japan; Several Feared Dead

A nine-year old girl died in Osaka, Japan after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Monday morning. This is first reported casualty of the strong earthquake that rocked the area, and there are fears more may have died.

The earthquake struck at 7:58 AM local time, with its epicenter detected at a depth of 13 kilometers, according to the Japanese meteorological agency. The Associated Press reported “scattered damage including broken glass and partial building collapses”, but a local official told the AFP there had been no reports of substantial damage, although they were still “checking the situation”.

The girl died after trapped by a damaged wall in a school’s swimming facility north of Osaka city. Several injuries have also been reported.

Power is out affecting more than 150,000 households, and train service has been suspended as maintenance personnel check for damage.

Photos of minor earthquake damage and chaos have been shared by Japanese netizens on social media. Some also shared their account of what happened amid the intense tremor.

“Very frightening,” said one Japanese on social media.

“I’m in northern Osaka and pretty strong shake here,” said another.

“My apartment is kind of thrashed, but structurally intact. Power is on. All my refrigerator contents are on the floor.”
