‘Super Typhoon’ Mangkhut (#OmpongPH) Targets N. Luzon, Arrives Wednesday

Latest update on ‘Mangkhut, aka Super Typhoon OmpongPH. (PAGASA)

As one storm leaves, a super typhoon approaches. That potential super typhoon is ‘Mangkhut’ (to be named #OmpongPH or Bagyong Ompong), which is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday.

According to the latest update from PAGASA, Typhoon Mangkhut is on course for northern Luzon and may intensify into super typhoon category. At present, Mangkhut is still outside PAR in the Pacific and may gather more strength as it churns towards the Philippines.

Once it enters PAR, Mangkhut will be named Typhoon #OmpongPH. Its effects will be felt in Cagayan and Northern Isabela and the provinces of Apayao, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and the Batanes Island Group, where very strong winds and heavy rainfalls may cause damage and flooding.

Meanwhile, #NenengPH has exited PAR earlier today.

Latest Update: Mangkhut / OmpongPH

The latest update from PAGASA at 4:00 AM today, Tuesday, September 11, says the potential #OmpongPH was 1,820 kms east of southern Luzon  and was moving westwards 30 kph. It packs 160 kph sustained winds and gusts of up to 195 kph.

PAGASA categorizes a cyclone as a super typhoon when its maximum sustained winds reaches 220 kph.
