Tennis Champ Petra Kvitova Injured After Knife Attack in her Home

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been attacked inside her home. The knife-wielding assailant was a burglar, according to Kvitova’s spokesman.

Petra Kvitova was injured in her left hand. However, it is said to be non-life threatening. The injury has been treated by doctors and the tennis champion is said to be recovering.

According to her spokesman, Karel Tejkal, Petra Kvitova was attacked by a burglar. It was a random attack inside her home on Tuesday morning in the eastern Czech town of Prostejov.

On her Facebook page, Kvitova posted a message to her followers describing that attack and the injury she sustained. She said it is ‘severe’ but she is strong and she will fight it.

“Thank you for all your heartwarming messages. As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife. In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support and now I would appreciate some privacy while I focus on my recovery,” she wrote.

Kvitova was the Wimbledon ladies singles champion in 2011 and 2014, beating Maria Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard in the finals, respectively. She is currently ranked 11th in the world.

Earlier in the day before her attack, Petra Kvitova announced that she has withdrawn  from the Czech Republic team at next month’s Hopman Cup due to a foot injury.

“I am so disappointed to announce that I will be unable to play at the Hopman Cup. The results of an MRI have confirmed that my foot is healing but not as quickly as we would have liked. The Hopman Cup is a fantastic event and I’m sorry I won’t be able to represent my country in front of the great fans in Perth,” she wrote on Facebook.
