What prompted two OFWs to commit suicide in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon?

The identities of the two OFWs have been withheld pending investigation of their deaths and official notification of their families. According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), one committed suicide on June 11 and the other died, also by suicide, on June 12.

So far, here are the few details that we have:

  • The OFW who committed suicide on June 11 was from Cagayan. She jumped from the sixth floor apartment of her employer;
  • The domestic worker who died on June 12 was from Agusan del Sur. She hanged herself inside her employer’s residence in Al Hasa, some 350 kilometers from Riyadh.

“We are deeply saddened by the news that two of our kababayan reportedly decided to take their own lives while working abroad and away from their families,” said DFA secretary Alan Peter Cayetano in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers to the loved ones they left behind.”

The DFA is now coordinating with the Philippine embassies in Beirut and Riyadh to make sure there was no foul play in the deaths of the two Filipinas. The agency is also taking care of the repatriation of their remains.
