No, veteran actor Eddie Garcia is NOT dead. PEP confirmed it. At 89 years old, the multi-awarded icon of Philippine show business is still going strong. In fact, he was just seen in Ang Probinsyano as drug kingpin Don Emilio, another contavida role that Garcia does so well.

In an interview with PEP six years ago, Garcia revealed what the plans are should he hit the bucket, so to speak. According to movie legend, he has already laid out plans for his death and cremation. In fact, it is already fully paid for!

“Ako kasi, pag namatay ako, wala nang makakaalam, e,” he told PEP in 2012. “Gusto ko from death bed, diretso sa crematorium, ‘tapos may kaibigan akong piloto, itatapon yung ashes ko sa dagat, sa Manila Bay. That’s it. No obituaries.”

“Ayoko ng fanfare, e. Tutal ganun lang iyan, after your death, pagkakaguluhan ka. After a year, wala na, so what’s the use?”

We can’t blame Eddie Garcia for being practical. But for someone who has contributed a lot to the Philippine movie industry, he deserves a better send off.

Born Eduardo Verchez Garcia, he started acting in movies in 1949 via ‘Siete Infantes de Lara’ and has made more than 300 films and countless TV appearance since. He is the only individual inducted in three categories in the FAMAS Hall of Fame: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Director.
