Though bettors favored France over Argentina in this matchup, much of the attention before the match was on Lionel Messi and how he would rise up to the challenge. And it looked like he would lead Argentina to victory in the early going.

France took the early lead when Antoine Griezmann scored after 13 minutes with a penalty after Kylian Mbappe was fouled. But, just before half-time, Argentina leveled the score thanks to a long-range strike from Angel Di Maria.

Minutes after the second half began, Argentina took the lead when Messi’s attempt was deflected by Gabriel Mercado into the goal. South American football fans could smell victory. But their lead did not last long as Benjamin Pavard equalized for Les Bleus.

Then, a teenager from France scored double that proved to be enough to send his team to the quarterfinals. Kylian Mbappe became the first teenager to score two goals in a World Cup match since the great Pele in 1958.

Sergio Aguero managed to score another goal in stoppage time but it was still not enough as France finished the match with a score of 4-3.
