According to news reports, the Rapid Rescue Team of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has rescued at least 26 distressed OFWs since April 7. These are OFWs who claim to being abused by their employers.

Two such OFW rescues have been captured on video which has now gone viral. In the videos, the domestic workers are seen running to a waiting vehicle of the DFA/POLO/OWWA while a Rapid Rescue team personnel assists team assists them. The rescue resembles as escape in as much as the OFWs are really escaping from their employers, a dangerous task also for the rescuers.

Dubbed as ‘Rescue in the Desert’, the operation is the latest move of Philippine officials in Kuwait to help OFWs after the death of Joanna Demafelis, the domestic worker who was found dead inside a freezer.

There have been dozens of reported abuses on Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait and other parts of the Middle East and Demafelis death was the last straw for the Duterte administration. In February, it imposed a total deployment ban on new hires that is still in effect to this day.
