WATCH World Cup 2018 Penalty Shootout: Russia vs Spain & Croatia vs Denmark

Russia will face Croatia in the quarterfinals of World Cup 2098 on July 8 after their dramatic victories over Spain and Denmark, respectively, in penalty shootouts.

Spain took the early lead against Russia via a Sergey Ignashevich own goal in the 12th minute of their Round of 16 match up. But the Russians equalized just before halftime with a goal from Artem Dzyuba. And that’s how the score stood as their match ended.

The heroics of Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved the day for the home team as he stopped two penalty kicks from from Koke and Iago Aspas.

In the second Round of 16 match up of the day, Croatia battled Denmark. Mathias Jorgensen immediately gave Denmark the lead with a goal in the first minutes of the match but Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic for the net about three minutes later.

An exciting penalty shootout had to determine the winner. And what drama it was. 

Christian Eriksen, Milan Badelj, Lasse Schone, Josip Pivaric and Nicolai Jorgensen all missed their penalty spot opportunities. For Croatia, it was Ivan Rakitic spot kick that proved decisive.
